New At Backyard Birdfeeding?
Here’s some tips and tricks for Beginner Backyard Bird Feeding
Starting a backyard bird feeding routine in the fall can be a rewarding experience as it attracts a variety of both resident and migrating birds. Here are some top tips and tricks for beginning bird feeding this season:
Choose the Right Food
• High-Energy Seeds: Opt for seeds rich in fat and protein, such as black oil sunflower seeds, safflower seeds, peanuts and thistle seeds. These are ideal for most birds during fall!
• Suet and Peanut Butter: Suet cakes provide concentrated energy and are perfect for cooler weather. Peanut butter spread on pine cones is another high-protein option
• Fruit and Nut mixes: Scatter seeds on ground-feeders to attract sparrows, doves, cardinals and juncos (as they love feeding on the ground)
Maintain Feeders
Cleanliness: Regularly clean feeders to prevent disease spread among birds
Squirrel-Proofing: Use feeders designed to deter squirrels to ensure birds get the food! You can feed squirrels separately!
Provide Water
Ensure a constant supply of fresh water: Consider adding a heater to birdbaths to prevent freezing in late fall. Or invest in a nice built in heated birdbath!!
Habitat Enhancements
Cover and Shelter: Plant evergreens or create brush piles for shelter. This helps protect birds from predators and harsh weather.
By following these tips, you can create an inviting environment for birds throughout the fall, supporting their migration and preparing them for winter. These practices also alert the birds that they can depend on you through the winter for food!
Start simple!! Don’t stress yourself overdoing it!! Start with one Multi-Seed feeder and build from there!
