Dried Black Soldier Fly Larvae
$80.00
Dried black soldier fly larvae are a protein- and calcium-rich insect treat that brings bluebirds, wrens, woodpeckers and other insect-eating birds to your yard. They're a natural alternative to dried mealworms with a better nutritional balance — and an especially valuable boost during nesting season and cold Nebraska winters.
What Is It For?
Black soldier fly larvae (Hermetia illucens, also sold as "calci worms" or "soldier grubs") are dried whole with nothing added. Offer them to supplement your seed and suet with the insect protein many backyard birds need — to fuel adults through winter, help parents feed hungry nestlings in spring, and support feather growth during molt.
Key Features
- Naturally high in calcium with a balanced calcium-to-phosphorus ratio — mealworms are naturally low in calcium by comparison
- High in protein and healthy fat for energy, feather growth and strong eggshells
- 100% dried larvae — no additives or preservatives
- Shelf-stable and mess-free; no refrigeration needed and far less squeamish than live insects
- Serve alone or mix with mealworms, suet nuggets or your favorite seed blend
- Available by the 10 lb bag or by the ounce from our in-store bucket
Best Birds for Soldier Fly Larvae
- Eastern Bluebirds — a top choice, especially in spring when feeding young
- Wrens (House and Carolina)
- Black-capped Chickadees and Tufted Titmice
- Woodpeckers — Downy, Hairy and Red-bellied
- White-breasted Nuthatches
- American Robins, Gray Catbirds and Northern Mockingbirds
- Baltimore Orioles during spring and summer
- Also a favorite of backyard chickens, ducks and other poultry
Feeding Tips
- Offer in a tray, dish or bluebird feeder; a small cup feeder works well for bluebirds and wrens
- Birds new to larvae may take a few days to discover them — start by mixing a handful into mealworms or seed they already eat
- Soaking in warm water for 10–15 minutes softens larvae and adds moisture, helpful for nestling season
- Offer only what birds finish in a day or two, and keep the rest sealed in a cool, dry place
